Waterpump Airlock?

I recently purchased a 46 Bertram with 3 Cruisair units and 1 waterpump that feeds the 3 units.  We ran the boat home from NJ with no problems running the heat.  We installed a new high speed fairing block for the transducer which is just forward and outboard of the water intake but is in the same place the old transducer was located.

The pump looks like it is as old as dirt but pumps plenty of water when it is pumping.  The problem seems to start after running offshore and the pump quits pumping water.  There is a small valve on the intake side of the pump which you can open and hear a small amount of air trying to escape from the valve but the pump still does not prime itself.  If you take a wrench and disassemble the valve, the pump will catch prime.

I do not know if there is 1 problem or if there could be a couple of problems.  Is the transducer blocking water flow, a valve issue, or a pump problem?  What do you think?  Thanks for your help.
