Tom~

Another thought…Check voltage of both banks upon return (before starting the charger) they should be similar, and above 12.8 volts if you haven''t had much bilge pump cycling….

Typically the port bank on Hatt's is the House bank (and where the pumps might/should power from) so the stb bank should have had no draw….If it's voltage much lower than the port….Either Load test that battery, or just replace it (and the one you removed)

It's not uncommon for one battery to weaken another in your scenario…Almost always best to replace all batteries in a bank at the same time for that reason.

Thanks Steve ... I'm going to monitor the batteries/charger and see what happens ... but only when I'm aboard ... I'm not comfortable leaving the charger on when I'm not aboard any longer.

First let me say that I'm not real familiar with Heart or Xantrex chargers…There are no field serviceable parts inside so we don't bother…

But if I were checking out the problem…I would compare the voltage drop on the Port bank to the Starboard bank battery (assuming it is the single batt) as the charger is cycling…Do this with no loads on…

If one bank/battery will not settle at the same voltage as the other…I''d say it's your problem…It won't hold a charge & the charger sees this as needing to come back up….

Replace that battery or bank….

I currently have a Heart Interface (now Xantrex) Truecharge 40+ charger on my
two bank battery system (2-8D's in each bank). The charger has worked without a
problem for the past 10-12 years. Two days ago, apparently one of the 8D's
shorted out (3.5 years old) and the charger "cooked" it dry. The other battery
in the bank was not hot nor was the electrolite/water level changed. The other
bank seems normal. I removed the bad battery and turned the charger back on and
it "appears" to be OK except that it seems to be cycling more than normal and in
the "40 amp" charge quite a bit ... is there any way to check the charger? Thanks.
