Thanks again for the information... it's all starting to make sense now.  My next question... where is a good source to purchase splitter boxes and vents - like 4" butterfly, etc.?  I have white vents now, but considering I just spent 4 years "un-painting" my mahogany, I'd rather use black vents to match my new outlets and let people focus on that nice warm cherry stained, satin varnished wood. Laugh

First, thanks for the links... a few more questions:

1.  They say that for a 16k btu unit (I'll use this as my base), minimum duct area of 38.5 sq. inches.  What would a maximum be?  Is there an area that I wouldn't want to exceed?...Not really...Usually more is better...What you don't want to do is restrict air flow...Restricted air flow causes icing in the cool mode (causing liquid refrigerant floodback to the compressor) & high head pressure in the heat mode (which makes the compressor work really hard)

2.  They say that the Supply Air (S/A) grill should be a minimum of 80 sq. inches.  Silly, but what is the difference between Duct Area and Supply Air Grill?  Is this for square supply vents?  Assuming that I'm using round vents, I'd only use the duct area... correct?...It's not really the same, and that 80 sq inches is a total of all grills installed...A 4"round grill is only about 12.5 square inches...So you would need 7...4" grills...But a 12x6 and a 4" would be close enough...Then you feed a splitter box with 7" duct (as shown in the specs) and use say 6" to feed the 12x6 from the splitter and also 4" to feed the 4" round...

If you want to shut off the small grill (with dampers) then the large grill & duct needs to be sized for the full flow, meaning 7" duct from the splitter & a grill that is 80 square inches...

I'll try to help...

I'm not familiar with Artic Air per say but if this is the unit/s you have ** you don't have permission to see this link ** am fairly familiar with the family...I'm not sure if this is the daughter, but I believe these are the same units as the old King air units that were built here locally in Largo Fl, (they are now in Clearwater Fl)

My opinion is that they have always been a "bargain" type unit that may or may not live up to their size claims (BTU)

I'm sure you can contact them directly for their recommendations for duct & grill sizing...

But if I were doing the job I'd likely size everything similar to the Cruisair Turbo 16K's requirements:

Back in the King Air days they claimed 19K out of a compressor that was only rated at 13.5K...But they may have changed since then...If it truly is 19K then I would refer to these requirements for the Cruisair 18K...** you don't have permission to see this link **

I'm a brand new member and was turned to this site by a fellow commanderclub.com member.  I have some questions, and I'm hoping for some help.

I have a 1967 Chris Craft 42 Commander.  To make a long story short previous owners installed three 19k BTU Arctic Air packaged units in this boat with digital controls.  From all that I have heard that would be overkill for my boat.  I have been in the process of a complete cosmetic (and now partial mechanical) rehab, and its now time to address the AC systems.  AC systems were new about 10 years ago (maybe 11), but have been used only about 1 season.  The boat sat for 6 years on the hard, and spent the last 4 being taken apart and refinished inside.  So, they are basically new.  At present, this is the configuration:

Unit 1 (19k BTU)- located in V-berth, under the bunks.

  - I plan to take this unit out of service, so no return and no vents connected.  it's just sitting there looking pretty.

Unit 2 - (19k BTU) -located under the salon flooring outside of the engine compartment.

  - 8" AC return in a side panel of the salon directly above the unit.  Return vent grille is 6x21

  - 6" outlet on oposite side of salon, next to companionway entry.

  - 4" temporary vent coming out of a hole in the bulkhead of the head just forward of the unit and pointing up to the ceiling of the salon.

Unit 3 - (19k BTU) - located in the aft cabin, under the back shelf, sitting on top of the fresh water tank.

  - Currently not hooked up.

 

So my questions at this point are fairly basic and any help would be appreciated:

1.  What kind of combinations of vents can I install coming off of any one of my 19k BTU units?  Is there some sort of a formula for the number of inches of venting that would be optimal?  I'm looking for a magic number... for example...

  - one 6" and three 4" vents?

  - three 6" and two 4" vents?

These are examples of what I'm looking for... I just want to know some of the combinations I could get away with.  This would help me to decide what size vents to put where that would enable me to distribute enough cooling.

2.  Can one unit supply enough cooling for the v-berth, galley (open to the salon), and forward head?

3.  Is 19k for the aft cabin too much?

4.  With minimal angles, how far can I run a duct (if 19k is too much in the aft cabin/head, could I supplement the salon area?).

I've never messed with air, and when I talk about putting new vents in, I don't just want to start hacking up a perfectly good antique boat and not be doing it the right way... This has been a long post, and I appologize in advance but I just want to have a good idea of what I should be doing instead of fumbling my way into cooling systems that aren't operating in an optimal fashion.  Thanks for any help you can provide!
