Marine A/C before Cruisair or Marine Air

50 Year Old Custom Marine Air Conditioning

50 or so years ago...Marine A/C was custom installed only (no production units)...This was what was installed in yachts for A/C...The system is what we call "Modulating" with a Semi Hermetic compressor, and each cabin had it's own thermostat that shut the flow of refrigerant off to that cabin when it reached the selected temp. One compressor & 5 air handlers in this case...This system is in a Berger Yacht & cools the lower deck cabins... The Cruisair units in the second picture were … [Read more...]

Marine AC Compressor SmartStart, Soft Start, Hard Start Assist

SmartStart_no_wires_face_right

Got a Compressor that is a bit hard starting...Maybe marginal Shore Power or Generator causing Tripped Breakers, Lights Dimming, or Battery Backups beeping every time the A/C starts...This could be your answer... I have installed several and found the claims to be true... The instructions are pretty straight forward, but I can also provide an installation video... Steve~ … [Read more...]

Marine Air Conditioning System Maintenance

DSCF1533

Greetings All, Let's start with the basics... Seawater flow thru your A/C system is primary... Without water flow....You have NO cooling ! Service people on the docks (at least the better ones) can walk down the dock during the summer and tell which boats they are likely to be getting a call from next just by the flow of water (or lack of) going overboard on each boat....Lack of seawater flow can cause other problems besides loss of cooling... Lack of seawater flow causes high system … [Read more...]

A/C System Ices Up

Ac System Icing

I notice from the Google searches...That A/C System Icing is a search done often.. Though there can be many reasons for system icing...There are a few that the DIY boater can rule out before calling the service guy ( I can discuss other reasons in the forum but here are a few of the basic answers) Direct Expansion A/C (as opposed to Chilled Water) systems rely heavily on Air Flow across the evaporator coil in order to pick up the designed amount of heat the system was engineered to … [Read more...]

It seems that when the system was flushed, that it was flushed just well enough to break loose some stuff...Now it is floating around in the hoses and … [Read more...]

Pumps & High Pressure…With Manual Controls & Hi Pressure Switch

Recently I was on a boating message board and came across a discussion about pumps and some troubles folks had experienced. The original poster had a March magnetic drive pump that would not pump water, and after the usual back flush & priming sugguestions he could still not get it to pump water…Just before I read the thread he had found that either something had gotten past the strainer (or he didn't have one) and had lodged between the impeller magnet and the pump housing … [Read more...]
