Just splashed the boat yesterday and turned on AC once in the slip, ambient temp was about 90F. Cabin temp when turned on showed about 92. After running ac for about an hour, checked cabin and display showed 104 (Passport 1/0 legacy) and when I touched the charge port on the top of compressor suction line it was very hot to touch. Shut the ac down, tried it again in about 2 hours and appears to do the same. Unit performed well last year in both heat and cool modes. return grate is clear, and i feel airflow out of supply grate. the waterflow out of the discharge is normal. The AC unit is original to the craft (1991), that i know of. We have owned it about 4 years. I didn't have ac gauges with me yesterday, I will check pressures when i go to the dock on Tuesday. I was trying to find a manual or at least a diagram of the unit, but could not find one online. I found one for the control and printed it. I cant find the discharge connector for the gauges, there is what looks like a thermocouple on the high side line, there are 2 heavy wires on it that's not connected to anything and its green in color. SN is 207-13H5472

thanks for the help

Unit performed well last year in both heat and cool modes. return grate is clear, and i feel airflow out of supply grate…Was the air flow cool or hot ?…Was the water coil hot, or cold ?…Is the light on the control indicating heat, or cool ?… the waterflow out of the discharge is normal. Also…Unless that 1990-91 unit has been retrofitted…It would not be a Passport I/O…The I/O did not come into production until 2003….So that manual you printed may not apply…The ECU control looks much the same as the Passport I/O, but will have a large penguin facing left, instead of a small penguin facing right on the ECU…

You can ID your control from this link: http://marine-ac.com/marine-ac…..ion-units/

I'm thinking that the unit started out with either a ECU, or XTC control…And it's important to ID what you have if we later determine you have a bad board etc…You may be forced to do a retrofit to the current I/O control as no parts are available for those older models…

The airflow felt room temp, certainly wasn't cool. I cant reach the water outlet to feel the temp….altho i could try to feel the discharge water loop near the ac unit. The light on the control is showing cooling. As far as the control goes, that was my mistake, I had looked at so much info, its the ECU one, altho I dont think mine says environmental control unit (but i could be wrong, or its worn off, again, I will look Tuesday).

Jeff~

What I'm trying to determine here is if the unit has lost refrigerant, or maybe the reversing valve stuck half way between heat & cool….

It sounds like from your description that you may have one of the units that the condenser coil (water coil) is hidden in the evaporator coil housing….Most units it's out in the open so putting your hand on it is easy…Feeling that coil (water coil warm or cool) can tell you if the unit is actually in the heat or cool mode…

What I think I might try is to run the unit in heat first….See if you get heat out of it with the heat light lit…If so, it's likely not low on refrigerant…Then switch back to cooling…This may free the valve if slightly stuck….

If you get no heat then yes, gauges are best to read both pressures…If the valve is stuck, the pressures will be close to equal (High & Low) with the compressor running…I have a trick that sometimes works to get the valve to shift, but it requires disconnecting the pump & touching power to the reversing valve coil wire while running…

If your low side pressure is down below 50 psi with High side below 200 psi…Then you have lost refrigerant…
