Unpleasant odor in forward cabin

My husband and I just purchased an Eastbay 43 FB (2001).  The boat is currently in GA to be hauled and painted.  We spent the weekend going over her bits, sorting and cleaning, and the a/c ran great.  However, there was a very unpleasant odor coming out of the vent in the forward cabin.  I can only describe it as organic – as if something is living, or has lived, in the system.  We searched the boat and found a filter on the unit under the settee in the salon, but no other filters for the system.  The equipment list for the boat says that it has the following units:  a/c pump PMA-1000; forward a/c blower E16FD-LP7MR; forward a/c compressor CSP 16K; saloon a/c blower E16FD-LP7MR; saloon a/c compressor CSP 16K.  I dpo not believe that any of the units have been changed since the boat was built.

Any thoughts you have on how to find and fix the source of this odor would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you-

Hi Jan~

First…The A/C's main job is to condition the air…But it only recirculates what it is picking up…

Here is a recent thread here on the forum about the subject…If you have any specific questions please ask back here.

Hi Steve-

I understand that the unit only conditions the air, but somewhere along the way it is picking up this odor – it is coming out of the vent in the forward stateroom and is nowhere else in the boat.  I guess my question is "where would you suggest I look for the source of the odor"?  Since I emailed you this morning, I looked at the drawings again and located the second unit, way forward under the berth in the forward stateroom.

I'm hoping that changing that filter will do the trick, but who knows.  (BTW, can the filters be washed out, or do they need to be replaced?).  I didn't see a link above to another discussion – sorry.  Have you heard of 'stuff' growing in the duct work that would cuase this odor?

Thanks again-

Holding tanks & bilges are common sources of odors….

Thanks Steve. I would like to get new filters for the blowers. I've been looking for the manual for the blowers on-line, but have not been able to find it. The equipment list for our boat says we have model E16FD-LP7MR. Is the manual for this model available? If not, would you be able to tell what filter I need to get?

Thanks for your help-

Hi Charlotte~

The type of filter material is not that important…You can go to Home Depot or Lowes & get what they sell for window units & cut it to size…

There is not a manual (that I know of) for each specific unit, but this is what should have come with the system:

I covers all Marine Air split systems….

Steve~
