Unit not cooling

I have three units on the boat here in Daytona Beach. Salon unit is a Cruiseair RX30C. Last week, while we were away and the units were on, the main breaker tripped, killing the water pump and the main unit. Found it pretty quick, reset breaker and everything worked OK. Today, I noticed the salon wasn't cooling very well, and when I touch the compressor unit coils, the top one was quite warm compared to the lower ones. Water flow is good, clean strainer. Would the coil temps indicate low freon, or something else?

If you are the one that has replaced triacs…I can say this….Remove the Yellow wire from the triac….If the thing it is powering shuts off….The Triac is good….The yellow wire is the signal wire that tells it to close and send power to whatever it's powering…

Nope, different guy.

Last problem I had was power-related. You pointed me toward the dock pedestal, and a transformer solved that problem. This is new.

soooo, any input would be appreciated.

Sorry…I was reading PM's (which btw I wish folks would not do…send me email please)

The coil temps indicate a lot…Hot coils don't usually indicate low freon…If it was low they would not be hot…

What you are describing seems fairly normal….Hot coil on top & cooler coil below is good…

If the lower coil is hot too, then it may be time to flush….

OK, couldn't remember if hot on top cool on bottom was good or vice versa.

I'm running the main unit now (9:30 PM) set to 74 degrees, and the temp difference with an IR gun is 20 degrees (76 & 66).

Cool air from vent is just that…cool, not cold.

During the afternoon, it was lukewarm.

The coils now aren't the same as this afternoon. Now, neither is appreciably warmer than the other (top vs bottom)

The top of the compressor housing is quite warm. Not burning hot, but I wouldn't want to leave my hand on it

IR gun says top coil 108, bottom coil 93, compressor 140.

Because it isn't doing much good, I turned the main unit off.

Company coming tomorrow though, and it'll be hot in here without the main unit.

Any clue what the problem could be? Other two units are running fine, and cooling nicely.

Cool air from vent is just that…cool, not cold...Was the actual cabin temp 76 ? And can the system suck hotter air from anywhere but the cabin ?

IR gun says top coil 108, bottom coil 93, compressor 140...This suggests you are low on R-22.

Because it isn't doing much good, I turned the main unit off...Yes that's best till you get the charge checked because of that compressor temp…Adding R-22 will lower the compressor's temp, but raise the coil temps which is ok.

Company coming tomorrow though, and it'll be hot in here without the main unit.

Any clue what the problem could be? Other two units are running fine, and cooling nicely.

Thanks Steve. It appears my math skills are inversely proportional to my degree of frustration. I'll try to get someone to come out and give it a shot of R-22, and see if they can find any leaks. It got some R-22 less than 6 months ago, and of the three units, this one is the newest, installed in 2008.

Thanks again for all the help. Don't know how you manage to run a business..seems like you must spend 8 hours a day just on this site!

Yes I am on here all day…Well at least in the mornings, and then several times all afternoon & into the evening…Often from my phone…

I do like to teach & help, but it's also part of business & the hope that folks will buy from me for that help over other sites that might be slightly cheaper…

Old School Service & Support is the way I see it  Cool

What is most frustrating is when someone comes here for free advise, then buys a cheaper unit, and comes back here for more free advise on that unit…I expect it to happen somewhat, but once identified, I'm usually not very helpful to the folks that do it…

Let us know how it works out…

Well, it took two pounds of R-22, and they felt sure there's a leak. had too much to do to deal with leak-chasing today, so we're going to go at it next Friday. These guys though, took the time to try to figure out why their gauges weren't seeming to act right. Turns out that in addition to the filters I could see and had recently cleaned in each of the returns, there was a piece of screen pasted across each of the air handler units that were back up in there, and I didn't see them. Each screen was COMPLETELY plugged with crap. Amazing the units could move ANY air. Kudos to them for taking the time to look. Thanks again for all your help.

Seen the filter thing many, many times: http://marine-ac.com/forum/mai…..e-checkup/

Please find that leak or you will burn up that compressor  Cry
