i am aboard a 1999 catalina 42 sloop 2 cabin that has a cruiseair 16,000 btu split system w/ one 12000 btu fan coil unit and one 5000btu fan coil unit that has been installed after the boat was built by professional company. it has worked verywell for 5 years. had a rat problem and thermostat wire is damaged but still worked well, i realize that this wire has to be replaced and will do that when i visit the USA. after 6 months of non use the thermostat when the unit is turned on displays 61 degree's temp. for inside cabin temp. i am in the tropics wishing for 61 degrees. i tried the calibration proceedure listed with the directions it sometimes adjusts then reverts to temp.'s that will not alow the unit to come on. when it did get the unit on it works well until it reaches the declining temp of the thermostat(not the actual cabn temp.) if a new thermostat or controls are required please let me know where i can order the parts(and thermostat wire). i will be in the USA in may and could pick them up, i would like to get any parts that MAY be suspicious as the boat is in guatemala and parts are non-existant.

Hi Don…Thanks for posting~

First I would look for the end of the temp cable (the part that senses temp) which is usually located in the return air path to the air handler…Be sure that with the system cooling…That none of that cold air is leaking back onto the sensor (the rats may have eaten thru a cold air duct and it is blowing onto the sensor)

After you verify that's not an issue then look for/do the following….

1999…That's about the time that Cruisair made a circuit board change that instead of using flat connectors & round wire for the temp sensor & control cable…They changed to flat cable & telephone jack type connectors…

I can see rats easily eating thru the newer flat telephone type cable but it would be a bit harder for them to eat thru the jacket on the round cable…

As far as a temporary fix until you can get a new sensor cable…I would look at the cable for the chewed spots (even if you have to remove it)…The round cable can be repaired easily by cutting out the bad spot & reconnecting the wires with typical crimp type butt connectors…The telephone cable is a bit harder to work with but can be repaired with cable splices that are meant for that flat cable…I'm not sure about in Guatemala, but here just about ever Home Depot or Lowes stocks those splice connectors…Maybe your telephone company can help if you can't find them in a hardware store…

I would then do a factory reset of the control as described in your manual…This will get everything (including your temp) back to the factory preset baseline…When it's finished, and if you have made your repair/s properly the temp reading should be pretty close to what it actually is at the sensors location (it should be no more than 2 degrees off)

You can also verify operation by wrapping your hand around the sensor end & see if the display changes (make sure you have pressed the temp button, and the little light indicating setpoint is not lit)

If you are still having issues after all that, then we either need to look at replacing the board or the sensor…But your response to the above will help with that answer of which to replace…

the thermostat is a SMXir. the rodent damage did not occur as i have checked all of the wiring and did not find any. the wires for control are the flat ones w/ telephone type of connections. pressing the bulb between my fingers did not raise the inside temp. on the display. inside temp on the display indicated 51 degrees, unit would not start(except fan)even when the setpoint is at it's lowest of 55 degrees. leakage would not be a problem as it would have to some temp. first and it is not starting, will seal all points when i am finished.

the phone system in guatemala will not let entries to the phone pad after the call is placed. i need a direct phone number i can use in order to place an order for parts. the parts will be shipped to st. pete. as soon as i can figure out what to buy. i know you are in tampa, you installed this system for me in 2005.

Hi Don~

I installed the system ?…Cool…Can't say as I remember it but how many boats ago is that  Smile

Hmmm…Just looked back in my computer records and I don't show you as a customer but anyway…

I am in St Pete & the phone number posted here on the site is direct to my cell phone 727-365-6123

No it would not start in cool if is sees the temp as 51 and the lowest you can go with setpoint is 55…It would heat though…

Sounds like you may need a temp sensor cable, but first try this…Unplug it at the A/C unit & spray some Corrosion X or the like on the plug & socket…Plug it back in and jiggle it a bit…You may just have a dirty connection and that could clear/clean it up.

If that seems to work it's still important that you do a factory reset since you have changed the temp setting in the program and we now have no reference.

If none of that works…Yes we need a cable/sensor & I need to know how long…In the mean time…To get some cooling till we get the new sensor down there, you can go back into the temp setting & set it up to anything over 57…Then with setpoint at 55 the compressor should come on in the cool mode.

When the sensor cable arrives, again reset to factory settings…

the boat was at the viking boat yard when it was installed in june of 05. the sensor cable needs to be about 40 ft.

is there a chance something else could be wrong as it is a LONG way back to the boat from st. Pete. i don't mind buying extra parts as i eventualy use them. if there is a chance the circuit board or thermostat is bad i would like to buy them. the extra expense goes along with cruising on a permanent basis.

i will try and call from guatemala monday, but would prefer to order online and have parts sent to my st. pete UPS mailbox so i can pick them up on may 9th. if this is possible please let me know.

From your description it seems only to be the sensor, but it's Always good to have spare parts when away like that.

I would carry a board & control as spares…If you want to PM me with your info I can send you an invoice that you can pay on-line with a credit card…I'll then ship to the St Pete address once I get verification…

ok i'm back from the big city w/ parts. you guessed it when i went to replace the temp. sensor it was corroded at the condenser, it is now clean and working.

i now have two extra thermostats and would like to replace the smxir display with one of the newer ones. can i use the passport i/o disp. 222000222 to replace the (on the back it states; factory set for split capacitor) smxir(black door) or should i use the 222000200 psprt-i/o display to replace the smixir.

is either one of these a direct replacement without doing anything except plugging it in?
