Sea water pump on a Marine Air vector series with 3 ac units

I finally found the control box to the sea water pump. The boat had to of been built around it… The part number is 2-6rp ? Its in a 1985 carver 3607 and came from the factory with the Marine air system installed. Inside the box there is a electronic relay with a 3-32 volt dc input  switches the ac voltage. Also a opaque tube that looks like it has maybe a cap inside it? Last fall the water pump was just barely turning like it was set up. I bought a new pump this spring, it ran just just once. I found a water leak in the manifold then shut off the AC panel to to AC units. On restart the pump again acts like its set up by turning real slow. I removed the pump and hooked it up to an AC outlet and it runs great. I checked the voltage going to the pump from the control box. I did get 110 volts on my volt meter on the AC scale. One thing I did notice with this boat, its my second with AC/Heat. That the water pump ran all the time even if the AC units was off. The Rinker I had with a lot newer Marine Air system the pump ran with just the AC. My thinking is that the electronic relay was stuck on and now has failed??

Thank you for you input, David

This article may help you understand how it's supposed to work David…

There may be a little more (or less) in there than your specific answer but, it might help you understand me when I ask questions, or what to expect/connect if we replace your relay box…From your description you have an older box that may better to replace than try to repair.

This link should give you an idea of what you are looking at for replacement costs…I do prefer the Cruisair boxes since you can replace individual parts, and the relay boxes don''t care what brand of equipment they are installed with/on…Cool

Hi Steve,

I had the 110 volts at the pump but it wasn't running to speed, it was turning real slow. I didn't check to see if the was 120 VAC at the pump output terminals on the ac Units or any sort of voltage. The Solid State relay  is a 3 to 32 VDC input. If the ac units on the pump terminals have 120 AC on them. The opaque tube must have a rectifier and a voltage regulator inside it. Going down to the marina after work Wednesday. I'll check at the to 2 easier to get at ac units to see what voltage or any is coming from the AC units and inputs on the relay box. Then check the solid state relay to see what voltage is there at the input. If there is a problem with the rectifer or voltage regulator, if there is one in the relay box. I'll replace the old box with a new one. I see you have a replacement for 275 bucks. Dose that include the visit to the chriopractor after stuffing myself in the cabinet to replace it?Laugh I read the link you had on how this all works, it was very informative.

Thank you very much, David

Interesting you read 110 volts at the pump when installed but it runs slow…Must be getting a false reading somehow if it runs OK when plugged into an outlet…I don't remember an "Opaque Tube" and I'm remembering those Solid State relays as being 90 t0 250 volt AC input…Could be I'm wrong (1985 was a long time ago) but could also be that someone has modified that box.

I would consider relocating that box if it's that hard to get to…It is a common service item…

I'd also really consider this box over the $275 Marine Air 6 PRP…

Cruisair PR3X-3 $310.00 Pump Relay, 115/230V, with three 115V Triggers…(If all units are 115V powered)

Like I said earlier…The only replaceable part in the Marine Air box is the board and it's $250.00 ($25 bucks less than the whole box)

You can see on that same page the individually replaceable parts for the Cruisair box and none are over $75.00, Triggers which are the most common issue with either box are $50.00 ea.

You should be getting full line voltage coming out of each unit to the relay trigger circuit when that unit is calling.

Steve,After more trouble shooting it was the salon AC unit the wouldn't start the pump. It was the closest to the engine room where the pump is located. It was the one after replacing the pump that I tried.  The trigger it was connected to was only putting out less than 3 vdc to the triac. The issue was masked by normally all 3 Ac units are on. The pump starts with fans, not the compressor. I have the salon AC hooked to a spare trigger. I know that some time in the future I'll need to replace the pump control box. I would rather spend the money to update the old  3 knob controls to digital. Do you carry the upgrades to digital controls? I would like to start with the aft cabin first, is this possible to do one ac unit at a time?

FYI the opaque tube has the triggers for the triac that converts the 120 vac to 6-7 VDC. It has 6 black hot wires from each input on terminal block. 1 white neutral wire coming from a common terminal block. 2 red wires to the triac DC side Then from the pump breaker the hot going to the triac and the neutral going to the common terminal block. That is how it was done back in the mid 80's. No printed circuit boards either.

Many thanks, David

I think I do remember that box now…Boy that is an old one…Glad you found the work around Wink

Yes I offer both Cruisair or Marine Air Controls…

Marine Air prices them as "Kits" and they will work with any brand of equipment.

Cruisair does not market them as a "Kits" so to speak, but we can build Kits…

Yes they can be installed one system at a time but it's up to you what form factor & brand you would like…We can also discuss that…
