Steve, I have a Cruisair 16000 BTU remote unit that is 5 years old.  Today on start up I had to reset the circuit breaker 3 times to get it up and running and when it did run it operated at twice the normal amps, the compressor got hot, and it sounded noisier than usual.  Seemed to cool ok.  Possibly lost run capacitor?

Hi Frank~

Could be a run cap issue but…Double the run load amps seems more like a stuck start relay that is keeping the start capacitor & compressor start winding energized…

Open the electrical box on the condensing unit & remove (unplug) a wire from the start cap (either wire on the black capacitor) then start it & check your amperage…If then normal when running…Replace both the start relay & start capacitor…Also look at the run cap (silver one) to see if the top is pooched out like a frozen soda can might be…

Get back to me if that is not the case, and do not run it more than a few minutes…We don't want it to get hot if we can avoid it.

Check the incoming voltage at the unit as well…At rest, during start, and while running (if it will start without the start cap connected)
