Hello this is a great location but I
am looking for some help.  I have a 16
btu unite that I believe is overcharged. I was icing up on the coil. I had a
house AC guy add some Freon to where the suction line is sweating at the top of
the compressor. Then the next problem is that the  unite started
to run for three minutes and fault out after three attempts. I changed the run capacitor
and I thought this fixed it. Know if it is cold start it will run till it
brings the temp down but then fails .. Am I over charged and compressor is
hitting liquid?

When you say it ran for three minutes and faulted out after three attempts…What was the fault code on the display ?

Was a full stream of water pumping overboard ?

What brand of equipment & what brand of control ?

Self contained unit, or split system ?

Do you know what pressures the system was running ?

All that info will help me help you….

Answer CLF

Was a full stream of water pumping overboard ?

Answer Yes full stream

What brand of equipment & what brand of control ?

Answer – Marine Air System Self Contained Marine Air conditioner and Heat pump model VHT16K-H.

Control board I would have to look

Self contained unit, or split system ? Self contained unit

Do you know what pressures the system was running ?

Low 48 high 148 using old gauges.

Answer CLF…This stands for "Compressor Load Fault"

Answer – Marine Air System Self Contained Marine Air conditioner and Heat pump model VHT16K-H.…This tells me the unit was produced between 1993 & 1995 and originally came with the ECU MAXX control system…

Self contained unit, or split system ? Self contained unit

Low 48 high 148 using old gauges.…These are way too low….With R-22…Should never be lower than 58 on the suction side…Both low & high side will depend on water temp & heat load…

At 48 psi R-22 is around 25 degrees, thus will freeze the humidity that passes across the evaporator coils…You also are not getting enough refrigerant return to the compressor which will cause it to overheat.

Thanks for the answers Nick~

What could be happening is the compressor is getting hot & tripping the Thermal Overload on a restart (the control sees this & faults)

I would say that if you recently had the system charged & it was charged properly with the correct refrigerant (R-22) then you have a leak…That loss of refrigerant can cause any or all of the above symptoms…

Please don't run it low on refrigerant…You will loose that compressor if you haven't already…Have the leak located & repaired…
