Oooh That Smell … Not the Lynyrd Skynyrd Song!

I have a sensitive nose … and there is NOTHING worse for me than the smell of sewage.

I have been tracking and destroying odors at their source on my Bertram 54 since I purchased the boat a year ago.

At this point, I have replaced most of the sewage plumbing, the macerators and vent lines.  I had the carpets steam cleaned.  There is still an unpleasant odor from the forward bilge are where the 3 macerator pumps, holding tank, shower sump is all located.  I have one of the inline Cruisair electric heaters for the master stateroom that is located down there too and it seems to accentuate the odor by heating it up … smells like cooked piss:-(

I believe that some of this could be solved with there was some ventilation to the area … seems like all the air should be cycled out of the bilge every couple of hours.

I have a somewhat fancy air cleaner coming … http://www.amazon.com/1000-Com…..mr-title

I don't expect this to completely solve the problem but it can't help.

I'm going to take a good look at the air handler under the master stateroom bed as I'm wondering if it might have been doused with sewage at some point from the overboard pumpout that cycles up through an elbow under the master stateroom bed before returning to the through hull.

I know that Dometic makes some air purification devices which I am willing to look into also.

A/C only re-circulates air…By nature that's it's job…..Sooooo….If it picks up or produces odor…It has to be because it does….Really pretty simple.

Yes…Dometic has an answer & we used these on a 110 Broward with a Diesel fume problem with great success…No they are not cheap but they work !!!

I just looked at the Amazon link in your post…The Dometic Enviro Tube I linked is around $300 cheaper and will go in-line in the duct somewhere…

No extra box to stumble over or look at…However Dometic also has smaller countertop type models too (smaller than what you linked)…

But at this point I only have experience with the tubes that go in-line in the ductwork.

Steve … any new thoughts on the small self contained air purifier units by Dometic?  I just occasionally have some smells in my 1979 Hatteras 43DC that I'd like to eliminate.  I have the original Cruisaire split systems with use in fresh water in midlands of SC.  I don't leave the units running when I'm not aboard but do have a dehumidifier that runs 24/7 to keep away any mold issues.  My only concern with the portable air purifier is that the site says that I'd need 7 units for my boat.  The existing system is not ducted so the inline duct unit isn't an option unless I build it in and install a fan to circulate the air … which may be the best option.  Your thoughts?  Thanks for the forum!

Hi Tom~

To answer your question…No I still don't have any experience with the small units…I know, not much help there, but I have put in a call to my factory rep to see if he can enlighten me a bit about your application (yes I'm familiar with the 43 DC layout)

At this point I can't see you needing 7 units, and to me the drawback to that many would be replacement bulbs…I don't know pricing on the small bulbs (the units came out after printing of the 2011 price book) but it's my understanding that they are not cheap and only last a max of 2 years….

Lifespan of the bulb can vary greatly as every time the power is cycled to the bulb, it shortens it's life (like switching from shore to gen or unplugging the unit)…7 bulbs may be a bit to keep up with…

I'll get back to you here when I hear back from him…

Thanks for asking  Wink

Ok Tom…He got back to me & here is the latest…

They are just now receiving the first batch of the small units…His thought is that most, if not all of those are promised out…

The good news is the price may drop from $180 ea to $100 or less…So he''s not sure they will offer replacement bulbs due to the fact the little computer fan & dust may mandate you replace the whole unit at that time anyway…

He did say they are tiny, and that yes you may need that many, but one thing that could help with coverage is to locate the ones that you can in an A/C return air path…Maybe you could save on one or two units & if you weren't satisfied add the others later…

The next batches of units should start coming quickly…

He is on the road till Friday but said when he gets back to the office he would get back to me with more up to date info…

Of course the best thing to do is update at least your salon air handler, which would give you better cooling than the old blow thru model, and then put one of the tube style units inline in the discharge duct  Wink

Steve

Thanks for the quick reply … let me know when you hear back from the rep on pricing and availability on the portable units.  Also … do you know the cost of the in-line unit for 4" ductwork and what square footage one would handle?  I might just build-in one.

Tom,

The 4" tube according to the specs is good for 6,000 Btu & the area that it might cool…

If your plan is to build one in…I would not put a 4" model on the 16K air handler where it would restrict air flow.

The 16K air handlers require 7" tubes to maintain proper air flow thru the A/C coil to prevent freeze up.

4" might be Ok for one of the staterooms though…

I'll get current pricing on all models when I hear back from Dan.

Tom~

I heard back from Dan yesterday when I was on the docks…

Current pricing has not changed (though he still feels it will on the small unit) and can be found in the Marine Airrr Pricing link at the top of any page here (page 11 for the Breath Easy units)

I can quote discounts thru PM or email…Dometic frowns on it in open posts…

Thanks Steve … if the pricing gets below $100 a unit then I'd be interested.
