Could anyone furnish me manuals or point me in the right direction to obtain the manuals for WJA7 and WJA16 cruiseaire split units. They are very old and in need of service. Thanks Martin

Hi Martin~

Yes those are very old units…They are also Cooling Only…Trojan, Egg Harbor, Pacemaker, Post, plus a few other boat builders that I can't think of ordered them that way…Back then it only saved $75-$100 per system, but they installed separate electric heat due to their seawater temps…

What kind of info were you looking for ???…I can likely help with specific questions…

Here is a current PDF manual that will have all the old literature info plus more on newer stuff, but there was never much service info in an owners manual…No service manuals were ever printed to my knowledge…They just had service seminars for techs (still do)  http://www.dometic.com/FileOrg…..ration.pdf

Good Morning Steve, Started to send private email but decided to post so that others might get the info as well. I have a Eastern Air (old) AC in my CC Catilina. The theromostat unit has gone bad and needless to say unavailable now. The input to the control module is through a 6 pin telephone type plug. It controls the "heat, Fan & AC" relays. My question is this: Is the pinout on the plug standard and if so where can I find the info and a replacement control ? I assume there is a ground, power, and three trigger.

I also have some more questions on the units referred to in my original post but will ask them after I get some more info together. I think I will need some parts and will go through you if possible. Thanks for all your help. Martin

Martin~

"Standard" Pin Out ???…I didn't know there was a "Standard"…Especially with microprocessor based controls…Yes there will be power to light the display but the other pins/paths may be multifunction, and some controls have the cabin temp sensor in the keypad too…Some have the processor in the board & some in the keypad…See what I mean ?  Wink

Does your Eastern Air have electric strip heat (some did) or is it reverse cycle ?

Does the control look like any of the ones in this link ? http://marine-ac.com/marine-ac…..ion-units/

hi Steve, Thanks for the reply. I haven't a clue as to what the controls look like. They were missing on the unit when I got it. By the age of the unit I rather suspect that they were the rotary button type. The unit has a heater element in the exhaust port. It is a large coil of wire about 6-8" long and 3-4" in diameter. I would imagine that the controls are analog vs. digital and looks as though they simply pull the relay to ground or +vdc. I was hoping that there was some standard wiring for controls.

I have another question please. The unit was used as a selfcontained unit although it is a split system. I want to install it as a split unit with the evaporator approximately 30' from the compressor/condensor. The high side leaves the compressor as a 1/4" line and goes to what I think is a dryer. It then leaves the dryer as a 3/8" line to the cap line. My question is this: can reduce the  the line from the dryer to a 1/4" line to make the 30' run. I read somewhere that the cap line was engineered for each system so the gas(freon) would be metered correctly and I am wondering if the 1/4" line would effect this balance. Again thanks for your help. Martin

Yes there is a "Standard" so to speak for the major builders of Marine A/C…But unfortunately Eastern didn't follow it, and the electric heat strip is part of the problem….

The new Passport I/O (digital) control can be programmed for electric heat, but has a limit of 15 amps (115 volt) which is probably Ok, or 10 amps (230 volt) when using the reversing valve circuit for electric heat (however you can use a external contactor or relay triggered by the RV circuit if the load is more than that….The kit for this control may be more than you paid for the unit at $630.00.

Standard 3 knob manual controls are now $465.00 unless you find a good used one…But the problem with that is they are automatic switch over (from heat to cool) so will still power the compressor in the heat mode & you don't want that…Compressor will cool while the strip is Heating…You would need a switch to interrupt the compressor line when you wanted to heat…

Good info…Do not alter the capillary tube in any way….It must remain the same length, and connect directly to the evaporator inlet…But that's not to say that you couldn't lengthen the tubing that comes to it…1/4" inch should be fine…

If memory serves me…I believe some of the old Eastern Air units were R-12 refrigerant…Better check the data plate before you cut into that unit…R-12 has been out of production for quite awhile and is very expensive…Yes there are blends that are replacements but they don't always work well…And some have propane as part of the blend which you may not want on your boat…

Yes it could be a fun project but…I guess what I'm getting at here is…Do you really want to invest that much time & funds into an old unit that in my opinion, didn't work that well in the first place when compared to a Marine Air or Cruisair unit of the same vintage…There are reasons they are no longer produced…

The units of today are far above what you are working with there in Every Way…

Are we talking about the Receiver Strainer that is connected to the 1/4" discharge (liquid line) service valve ?

If so, I'm showing it to be part# 31170 at $131.00

Yes…between the compressor and the service valve. Martin
