Noisy Marine Air VCP24SZ in Salon

We have a Carver 53 Voyager (11 years old) with 4 self contained Marine Air AC/heat units factory installed. All units are running. Our long term issue has been the noisy unit in the salon, a 2 ton 230V unit. The unit is installed in a cabinet next to a couch. I have a picture of the installation assume picture up loading is a problem. When we had the boat in Ft Lauderdale several years ago I complained about the noise (I think the noise is 95% "compressor" noise) and a local contractor insulated the compressor. I think this step produced a marginal benefit in terms of noise reduction. Essentially …we live with the noise.

I got excited when I saw the Vector Turbo and the sound enclosure option….alas the product line maxs out at 16,000 btu/hr.  I think our application requires a 2 ton unit.

In summary, does anyone have a suggestion how we can reduce the noise?

In retrospect I think  having a 2 ton compressor operating in Salon in a "tight" enclosure (with no noise control) is a lousy idea.

Naturally a split system is one approach. At this stage that looks expensive, over $5000.

Another approach would be 2 one ton Vector Turbo's. The space is too tight for this approach.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Hi L~

If your unit is 11 years old…It Likely has an old design Piston type compressor which is a good bit noisier than today's Rotary or Scroal types (less efficent too) and I have yet to sell a optional sound shield for a Turbo unit with it's new Rotary compressor…They are that quiet, and after install I guess people decide it's not needed.

Yes two Turbo 12K units could be one answer, but a pair of those without display/keypads will run just over $5k retail….and you would need to redo ductwork for two units…Not good to run both in the same ductwork…If one cycles the others cold air tends to backfow thru the one that's off.

They are making a single unit with Scroal compressor that is 27,000 BTU for around $4,200 retail but they don't offer a sound shield for it…

Sea Ray used to be quite creative in trying to reduce compressor noise when they used self contained units…They did things like install a acousticaly insulated baffel/wall (insulated plywood) just in behind the return grill that allowed the air to flow around it, but blocked/reflected/absorbed some of the noise back into the cabinet and away from the return air opening…

They eventually went with split systems but now with the Turbos being so quiet, I'm not sure if they will switch back or not…They don't need to keep licensed to handle refrigerant staff to purchase & install self contained units…But running seawater long distances has always been a problem with marine growth shutting off flow for them during warranty periods, so I'm guessing they may stay with splits on the larger boats…

Steve,

Good morning.

I checked my manual….I have a scroll compressor.

I understand the wood baffle idea. This presents another issue for me. Currently my manual  notes I should have 280 sq inches of RA. The Carver insatallation is not close to this. I have a picture but guess its about 10" x 15", coverd by a "decorative" grille and a washable filter behind it. In addition the unit is installed in such a fashion that the coil is 90 degrees away (plan view) from the RA grille. The scroll compressor is about 4 or 5" away from the RA.

Would my pictures help?

Thank you.

Pictures could help & you can send them to  service@marine-ac.com

You are right…That's not enough return area for a 24K unit…Thats more like for 16-18K, but it shouldn't have much to do with noise…at least not in cooling mode…It might in heat mode…

In cool mode it restricts the amount of heat you can pick up…Thus reducing compressor load & making it quieter…

In Heat mode it restricts the amount of heat the coil can get rid of…Therefore increasing compressor load & making it louder.

The fact that the compressor is right behind the grill will affect noise level.

L~

Got your last mail with the picture of the salon…Nice Layout  Wink

Could that couch not be moved a couple inches Aft to get it away from that panel ?…I know you said it fits tight and I can't see the aft end…

It wouldn't take much to allow grill installation & enough added air flow…

Steve,

Good morning.

The AC unit is forward of the portside couch. So to speak just to the left of the furthest folding chair. The picture is looking forward, when I took he picture my back was so to speak against the sliding door.

The couch is tight fit…there isn't any space to move it. I wills ee if I can find another picture.

Ok…So I was right the first time, but yes with your newest picture I see the problem….

I guess your only option as I see it, is to enlarge the exsisting return air cutout & grill…How large is that area ?…

If you were to open it up to the limits…How close would that get us to the required 280 sq inches ?

We can always have a custom grill made to fit any size hole….
