Noise when starting

I have a 32' express cruiser with what I believe is the original A/C system (except the digital control). It is a Mermaid Mfg. model 12, heat/cool reverse cycle. it works very well even on the hottest 90 degree days. It is located under the setee seat. I get about a 18 to 20 degree differential between the cabin intake air temp and the discharge temp. The compressor runs fairly quietly, but it makes a very loud noise when it starts. I'm assuming this is the contactor slamming shut. is there anything i can do to get a quieter start?

That would be hard for me to say…Not hearing it & you assuming it's a contactor…Is it a CLACK type noise ?

About all I can offer is…If in fact it is the contactor making the noise…Try replacing the contactor…But contactors do Clack when they pull in….If it's more like a chatter…Then yes the contactor is close to failing altogether…

Or you could go with digital controls that a contactor is not needed…Then bypass the contactor & the compressor switching & load carrying would be done by the new control box….Contactors are much cheaper though…

Steve, yes it's a loud CLACK noise that only lasts for an instant at startup. It is not a chattering noise. I'm assuming it's a contactor, don't know what else it could be. The CLACK noise is the same as it's always been since I bought the boat 11 years ago. Can you give me a ballpark cost for the digital starter?

I did not say digital starter…But you could replace the contactor with a solid state relay…I would need to know what voltage is feeding the contactor's electromagnetic coil…

I believe Mermaid did it two different ways depending on the control they were using…Some were 24 volt & some 115 volt…

I was speaking of a complete new digital control system which starts at $565.00

A solid state Relay from Dometic would be around $100.00
