Greetings,

I have a '99 Maxum 3300SCR with a factory installed Marine Air Systems Vector Compact (VCP16K). The control is also the factory installed Marine Air Systems Digital Passport II. My boat is in Virgina where the temps can run from the low 80s up to 100.

For the past few summers we've been spending a lot of time at the dock (gas $$$) so we've had the air running a lot more. The system is great and has run without any problems at all. However just a few days ago I noticed that the unit has a louder "click" when the compressor kicks on. I don't remember it being that loud, almost sounds like its arcing. It "clicks" twice then starts up and runs normally during each cycle. When the cycle ends its quiet as a mouse, no click at all.

I've searched the web site and didn't find anything talking about this subject. Is there a relay or control that I need to look at replacing soon?

Thanks,

Chris

The Click is normal Chris…That is if it is the reversing valve that is clicking…

They energize it before startup to equalize system pressures instantly so that if the compressor has only been off for a short time (such as switching from shore to gen) it's not trying to re-start against higher head pressures…

The only thing I can think of that might make it louder than normal is if the nut that holds the electromagnetic coil in place has come loose…The coil then vibrates slightly away when running and when energized it Slaps back into position…

The reversing valve has 3 tubes into one side & 1 out the other…The coil will have two wires connected…Look for the nut that holds that coil on…

Other than that…Maybe a short somewhere is causing an Arc…Gain access to the unit, and in the dark, have someone start it for you…Look for a flash (of course without touching anything)

Steve,

Thank you very much for your advice. I started googleing for a picture of the reversing valve after reading your post. During that search I found a manual for a unit like mine and was surprised to find maintenance procedure for the reversing valve. In the manual it stated that on the dual system that you should cycle it to the heat position at least once a month. So I cranked up the thermostat so the heater would kick on. I let it run a minute then cranked it back down. After a few cycles the unit was quiet as a mouse. You can't even hear the reversing valve now.

Thanks again for your help. Excellent web site!

Chris
