Marine Air Runs for 3 minutes and shuts down

I have 2 Marine air VRP12K units installed on my Morgan 38cc.  The rear unit works perfectly, but the front unit turns on and runs in cooling, heat or fan only for 2-3 minutes and then shuts off.  There are no error messages on the digital thermostat.  I have swithched themostats and get the same results.  The water supply to the unit appears to fine.  Both units are supplied from a common pump.  Could this be an issue with the run capacitor? or am I missing something.

Hi Roger…Sorry for the delay in this response…We have been having a bit of trouble with the site…Hopefully the problems are behind us now…

When you say it shuts off…Does the display on the Passport II control blank out ?

If it does…Then I believe we are looking for a power problem like a wire, connection, etc maybe overheating & breaking contact when under a load.

Don't think at this point the run cap would have anything to do with it…That wouldn't cause the fan to stop too as the run cap is only for the compressor.

Steve,

Yes the Passport II control goes blank and everything shuts down.  If you restart, by pushing the start button it will restart again and then repeat the cycle .

I would be checking every foot of wire & every connection in-line from the breaker to the unit…It seems you may have something that won't carry the load, and is overheating causing the voltage to drop below the threshold of what it takes to keep the control electronics lit up….Then when the control goes out everything shuts off, and the load is removed allowing the voltage to rise back up…The control will then power back up.

If I'm right…It could be a big fire hazard if that wire shorts to the wrong place when it burns thru completely..Weak or dirty connections can also get cherry red & start a fire in surrounding materials that way…

Please check everything in the electrical path to & in that unit's electrical box throughly….

Steve,

Checked all of the wiring from the breaker to the unit and all is good.  The power to the unit stays on and is uninterrupted even when the unit shuts down.  Additional checking shows that there is no output power to the circulating pump from the unit.  The pump seem to only be powered from the rear unit.  When I shut the rear unit down by turning the breaker off, all water flow ceases even when the front unit is turned on.  Is this a problem with the circuit board?

For that unit to shut off completely as you described before…It should be tripping the breaker…The display should not go blank, unless the voltage drops below a certain threshold rapidly, or if the breaker trips…

But yes…Loss of water flow to that unit could cause either of the above, however the control should give you a fault code if installed & programmed correctly…

You should have a Pump Relay Box that receives a signal from each unit and tells the pump to start when a unit calls for it.

Your problem is likely in the pump relay…This article describes much more http://marine-ac.com/marine-ac…..mp-relays/

Replacement boards & complete relays can be found in my store…Or at your local dealer.

Let me know if you have more questions after reading the article I linked…

I am having a very similar problem with my 11 year old Marine Air System systems as well. I have two units (one at my helm and another for my upper aft deck). The two systems share a 2-6PRP pump relay board. Both units behave the same: after a couple minutes they will shut down and the Passport II display goes blank. I do hear relays going on a off after the units shutdown and the display is blank. The other strange characteristic is the Passport II display goes dim, very dim, almost not visable for entire time the system is still on. The AC seawater pump does not seem to be activated by my pump relay board – the pump is on all the time, even when the AC units are off.

I did measure the power to the unit at 240V and 60Hz. When the system is on, the voltage remains 240V but the hertz reading goes way up to the 200Hz range and bounces around. I am no electrical engineer, but that does not seem right.

When I read down this post, I see that the pump relay board may have been your problem. What was your solution?

Mike~

It seems you likely have a bad board in the your pump relay (2-6PRP) Specifically the pump Triac on that board (not field serviceable) so you will need to replace the board to get the pump to shut off with the compressors….

You are correct in that 200 Hz is not good…Don't think I can recall ever seeing it that high myself…I might question your meter, or your method of measuring Hz…You may want to try any of the wall outlets aboard to confirm your reading on that meter…Cycles (Hz) should be the same throughout the boat even at 115 volts…If it's anything above 62 Hz…Shut off all power & Get some pro electrical help as this could burn up many things aboard….

Display brightness…There is a nighttime mode..Pressing the fan & down arrow buttons simultaneously while powered up will toggle it on/off…

I guess I should ask if you have your Passport II manual ???…I would start reading it as it's way too much to type here, but Page 11 starts describing the program mode…I would start by restoring the factory preset parameters as described in the Important ! note on page 11 (hold down power button for 10 seconds while in the off mode)

This will set the control back to the basic factory operational values that should work, but may not be the best for your installation…Then read on about all the individual changes that can be made to improve/customize operation…

But first & foremost…Please get to the bottom of the 200 Hz thing…

Mike~

The pump relay should not be related to your problem as I read it…It's a second problem…In fact you should be able to turn it off with it's breaker in the main panel…Most have their own breaker, but a few boat manufactures (such as Ocean Yachts) wired the pump relay feed to the salon A/C breaker…This meant that the salon breaker would need to be on, even if you were not using salon A/C for the pump to run….The pump relay also has a fuse inside that you could remove…But again I can't see how that would cause the other problem/s…

Your display's dimming seems it may be a low voltage problem as you describe it…Display dims with fan, and gets worse when the compressor tries to kick in…The compressor uses the most amperage (especially when trying to start) are you sure it does in fact start & run ???

Have you tried running any of this on the generator ???…Could be a shore power problem on the dock, and the more load that is applied, the worse the problem gets (it seems to affect your other 50 amp service as well)

If it will all run ok (aside from the pump not shutting off) on generator, then I would look at the shore cord ends, or the box on the dock for the problem…

To do the factory reset…Just after the breaker is turned on, and as soon as the display lights up with the temp reading…Press the power button on the control…The display should go blank…Then again press the power button & hold it for 10 seconds…It should give you a software version & then another verification and again shut off…It will now be back to factory presets as described in the table in the manual & you can power back up to test.
