March PMP500 pump overheating

After running for 12 hours without any problems, my AC stopped cooling.  At the time I was out on the lake running the off the genset and only dermined that the compressor was running for a few seconds and the cutting off.  When I got back to the marina to further trouble shoot everything worked fine.

The next day when I was back at the marina the AC ran fine for about 3 hours and then cut off.  With a little investigation I discovered the water pump was not pumping and was very hot.  I discovered a deflated plastic raft was covering the pump.

Since the pump is water cooled, could the raft covering the motor be enough to cause it to overheat?  I am guessing that other possible causes could be the water cooling tube is clogged or the impeller is getting stuck.  (I had a similar problem with my magnetic coupled water circulating pump on my hot tub where due to ware, the impeller was getting stuck.)

Any suggestions?  The boat is a 1999.  Is it time for a new pump?

James~

You describe a very common problem…At least if you have a "Cal" brand pump…It's identified by a chrome looking body…

However if you have a "March" brand pump that actually is liquid cooled it's very "uncommon" but not unheard of…

The March pump will have a plastic looking body & head…The Cal will look all metal & thus you would think better quality….

Not So…

The "CAL" has many problems…The "March" is good to go….

The March may, Plug up it's cooling tubes with mud (not it's fault) but the "Cal" needs to be submerged constantly to keep from overheating…It's really not a good option for Marine A/C….

Sorry, should have elaborated…If your "March" pump overheats….Then it likely needs it's cooling tube cleared, and you can do this (most times) by removing the pump head & blowing thru the tube with compressed air….
