Loud noise on compressor stop

My largest unit, an RX30, was making some strange noises last night in heat mode. When it is called to come on, I hear a click and then a second or so later, a second click, and the unit starts. First question…is the "double click" an indication of a problem of some sort?

Second, when it shuts down, it makes a very loud noise I can only describe as a loud "whoosh". I've heard the compressor unit at home make this same sound during cold weather, never when it is in cooling mode, so it must be something to do with heat mode. It doesn't make the noise every time. Can't find a pattern to it. Is that noise anything to be concerned about?

It seemed to hold the set temp fine all night, it's just that I never noticed it making this noise last winter.

Hi Jimi~

Before startup you are hearing the Reversing Valve being energized (Clicks)…Whoosh at shutdown is the reversing valve releasing & all the pumped up refrigerant pressure bypassing back to the other side (low side) of the system.

What cabin temp are you trying to maintain ?

Try running the fan on manual High speed & get back to me with if it still does it (The Whoosh) running that way…

Also with it cycling at that same temp with the fan on high…Tell me if you still hear 2 clicks before it starts or just one.

It was set to hold 69 degrees. Not sure of outside temp last night here in Daytona, or of water temp, but neither was very low. Just trying to keep the chill off.

I'll try the fan setting tonight and see what happens. Is there any particular reason the smaller unit that was also running wouldn't make the same noise with its reversing valve releasing?

In Fl I'm not so concerned with water or outside air temps, but cabin temp does have bearing here…

You could have an air flow issue causing the unit to cycle on the high pressure switch…Knowing those answers can pretty much tell me if that's the case…  Smile

Set fan on manual high, and it still acted the same. Seemed that as the night went on, and the temp outside dropped, it happened more frequently. Still not an every-time occurrence. Noticed that at times, the unit seemed to run for a while, then shut off, then start again within just a few seconds (5 to 10). The clicking didn't seem to change. Still a click, then about a second later, a second click followed immediately by the unit start.

I think…What's happening…Seems It's cycling on the High pressure switch….

Either:

  • The cabin is too warm…Or
  • The Air flow is too little…

This could be a normal thing with Ocean Yachts….They are known to not run adequate ductwork…Even on HIGH fan !

The cycling happens due to lack of air flow….The clicking is because it was less than 2 min since it shut off last (part of the SMX programming) and it's doing as much as it can to try to keep you comfortable (the SMX control) by cycling as much as it can to bring the room up to temp ( Again that's part of it's programming) the clicking is part of it is equalizing pressures…It ensures that the unit does not start against that head pressure I mentioned earlier…Thus the Whoosh too !

It seems you may need more air flow…Or don't keep as warm a cabin temp, Or when in heat…Always run in manual High fan speed, Or "FIX" Ocean's ductwork…Easier said than done but we can do it  Smile

Thanks, that seems to be pretty much in line with what you said a few months ago when I was having issues with the cooling…problem is getting to the duct work. I'll spend some time looking at it and see how to R&R the stuff, then will get back in touch to see if you can give some advice as to preferred size of duct and outlets.

In the meantime, I'm going to do some PM and replace all of the hoses from the manifolds to the individual units. The newest unit, the one that is the subject of this post, has white hoses, and the other older units have black hoses. Is the white stuff something that Cruisair supplies with new units? Is there any reason not to use regular 5/8" heater hose, such as I would get at NAPA? I also saw some 5/8" silicone hose on Grainger's site with a working pressure of 80 psi. Would that be OK to use? can't imagine I'd get close to that pressure in the raw water feed circuit.

I prefer the Black 5/8" heater hose….Barnacles seem to like it least.

I guess the standard black heater hose is OK then? Local parts store sells hose with pressure rating of about 60 psi.
