High Pressure Freon

So it is a 5000 BTUI unit, was working great last weekend, now it shows the old HPF error. Water flow was first thing I checked, it wasn't any less than normal but I cleaned the strainer and put some chlorine tablets in it, ran that thru till the tablets were gone. I have started and restarted and the HPF continues to come on. The unit is 7 years old, self contained and the unit itself is spotless, the condensate drains into the shower sump and that is always on so no float issue to worry about. It starts to cool but then kicks off, I think the sensor is bad, it certainly can't be over full of refrigerant after 7 years running. Any thoughts?

I don't think I have ever seen a high pressure switch fail where it cut off prematurely…However I have seen them fail in the stuck open position where they won't allow the compressor to come on…

This usually only happens in cases where the operator keeps resetting HPF faults without fixing the problem…

If you are sure you have full water flow, then I might suggest you do an acid flush of your condenser coil…At 7 years of age it's time…

Lots of info here on the site about it  Cool

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply, after a full day of running the water thru it with two chlorine tablets in the sea strainer, and periodically letting it sit for an hour or so between running, the HPF error has stopped showing up and the unit is working reliably so far today, it is 100 degrees outside and the cabin is keeping at 76. I measured the water flow, I filled a 2 gallon bucket in 37 seconds so seems like the flow wasn't the problem, cleaning was. DO you think I should go ahead with an acid flush? Or do you think the chlorine must have done the trick?

Thanks again, GREAT site by the way, lots of useful info.

Here's the deal…First, chlorine tablets may kill scum, but I don't think they will do anything to hard scale…

Scale acts like an insulating blanket preventing good transfer of heat to the seawater.

Normal system head pressure is somewhere between 200 to 275 psi depending on the seawater temp & heat load on the system.

The high pressure switch does not cut off until 425 psi.

Without gauges we don't know how high your's is running, but we do know you have been tripping the switch, and now you may be at just below where it trips…

The higher that pressure runs due to poor heat transfer…The harder the compressor has to work against it and the more amperage it will draw.

This stresses everything in the system to it's limits including electrical connections…

It's your call, but If I didn't have gauges to see where it actually is running (lower is better) I would acid flush the unit…

It & everything related including you will likely be much happier  Cool
