Steve,
I had a HPF code and shutdown on my A/C last weekend and I'm looking for some help.
I have a 2006 Albin 28 with factory installed Marine Comfort Systems PH series, 12K BTU self contained unit with digital control panel. After about 45 minutes of running last weekend the system shutdown with HPF code on the display. Very hot day, 90+ with 80-85 degree water temps. Cabin started at 87 degrees and dropped to 78 when the the fault came up. System appeared to have good water flow, good strong flow out the though-hull. I'm planning on flushing the system but I was reading a few other posts here and have a question. I have run the system for a total of about 4 hours this year. The system is always closed and that makes me wonder if growth should be a problem. Last year I worked the system hard on several hot days and didn't have this problem. Is there anything else to check prior to flushing. Despite the lack of use since winterizing last fall, is growth still the best place to start?
Thanks,
John

Hi John~

From your description it does not seem you should have growth…Not enough run time for anything to grow or live…

You could however have a hard water scale buildup inside the water coil itself from years of running…It accumulates over time like in a radatior in your car, or a heat exchanger on a fresh water cooled marine engine, and it can act like a insulating blanket preventing proper heat transfer to the water…Growth will Block/Reduce flow…Scale will not.

With the system running…Feel that coil with your hand…One end should be hot, and the other not…If it's hot all the way around…You should flush that coil…This of course is assuming you have full water flow…

Steve,
Thanks. I ran the A/C for about two hours today and no problems. hot and humid out today, 95 or so and 85 degree water temps. I think everything checked out ok. Out flow water temp was 92-93 degrees. Coil was cool on one side hot on the other. I took several temp readings today. Hot end of the coil was reading about 125, compressor was about 130-160 depending on the spot. I think the cool end of the coil was about 60-65 but for some reason I didn't write that one down. Air temp at the exhaust vent was running 56-57 degrees. Cabin went from 93 to 77 in about an hour. I did find a couple of openings I need to block. The bow location for the unit is open to the bilge so I need to find a way to close that off. There was about 4-5 inches of water in the bilge today that blocked air flow but that's another issueFrown
Thanks again for your help,
John
