I own a 1991 310 Sea Ray Sundancer with a 12,000 BTU air conditioner manufactured by Marine Air Systems. The compressor was replaced 2 years ago. The system may be original.

Prior to having problems the unit cycles on the digial thermostate with the fan light coming on first. Then after about 40 seconds the "cool" light on the display would come on which indicated the compressor would kick on at the same time as the water pump.

Now the fan light comes on but in about 5 seconds the "cool" light comes on. Then after about 40 seconds the compressor tries to start, a little water comes out but the unit kicks the breaker. I notice that the volt meter goes from 119 volts to around 100 and it kicks off. This is about what it always did.

I have cleaned the water filter and back flushed the system so I am sure it is not a water restriction problem.

We checked for low coolant, it is fine. We checked for a ground fault off the compressor and it is fine.

This problem started about 3 months ago when we would come to the boat for the weekend and the breaker would be off. After resetting the breaker about 3 times, the unit would run all weekend. Some time during the week, it would shut off.

I am located in Charlotte NC/ weather mild

Hi Steve~

Sounds like you either have a weak shore line (small wire to the dock pedestal) or a hard to start, and now maybe locked compressor.

A Marine Air brand unit of that vintage may or may not have a start capacitor & relay (later self contained models did not) that could be bad too…

Here is a training PDF to help you check out the compressor, it's capacitor/s & relay (if it has one)

Let us know how that turns out…

Steve~
