Cruisair SMX2 blowing circuit breaker

I got a 1999 Sea Ray Sundancer 500 with 3 units and 1 waterpump Cruisair system with SMX2 panels. The front unit Cruisair Model#SX10c-Q2 will run for about 3 minutes an pop the main circuit breaker. It will also pop the circuit breaker with the unit off as per digital board, I can feel the compressor running, and if I touch the top of the compressor it is very warm to the touch before the circuit breaker blows. I did a search on the forums here and maybe a waterpump start up relay? But I'm not sure if that is it because the circuit breaker will pop off even with the unit off as per digital board even though I still feel the compressor humming.

Hi Eric…Thanks for posting, and again thanks for the detail on what you have~

I must admit I'm a-bit confused about your comments of "as per digital board"….What do you mean by that ???

If you have a problem with pressure, or the pressure switches…The SMX will show a fault on the display and shut the unit off…It may take several cycles depending on what the problem is, but it will show a fault…

But…If it trips the breaker as you say…Then there is either a short, overload, or a restart happening before the SMX can see it.

A Hot compressor (and a SX unit is a piston type compressor as opposed to a Rotary) is an indication of something else wrong (piston compressors run much cooler than rotary's)….Did it run for awhile before it got hot (without tripping the breaker) ?

I know you say you feel the compressor humming…But is it really running ?…Next is, is it tripping it's overload with a pop noise ?

It should do this before tripping a breaker…But if the breaker is weak, or sized marginally, The breaker might trip before the compressor overload….

The thing that you mention that really makes it strange is it pops the breaker with the unit off….Meaning the SMX off ????…I guess that's what you mean by as per digital board…If yes then…

That might indicate you have a welded, or failed compressor Triac (solid state relay) that is keeping the compressor powered any time the breaker is on….

To test for that…Press off on the SMX, wait 30 seconds (SMX needs 30 seconds to save memory) then shut off the breaker & wait at least 5 min (This should give the system time to equalize pressures)…After that turn on the breaker & see if the compressor tries, or does run without the SMX display on…If it does, then you have a bad Triac that can be easily be replaced….But if it trips the breaker it could be that the compressor is locked and is what caused the Triac to fail by over amping it with "locked rotor" amperage…

Ok here is the latest, I confirmed the SMX has unit off after 30 second power on/turn off main power breaker and re-start for memory, also confirmed when unit re-started all led lamps were off except the the "Set" led, and the A/C waterpump was pumping water. End result "Circuit breaker still poping".

Went back to boat 1 hour later to test if Heater is making heat. Started system up, up tempurature on SMX board to 90dgr, I could hear the compressor humming and now with heater on a clicking noise could be heard (maybe compressor trying to start?), there was "No Heat" about 2 minutes later the main circuit breaker pop off.

Eric~

Sorry to say…Yes your triac is bad….But From your description…The compressor is also bad (locked)

The locked compressor could be the cause of the bad triac…Or…The bad triac could have been the cause of the failed compressor by running for many hours without the fan if the breaker was left on.

Fix ?…

  • Compressor replacement & Triac too….$1200 at least…Or…
  • New STR-10C Turbo…Around $2500….but discount may apply…

New Turbo unit is better in many ways & has warranty…

Steve~
