Cruisair Excessive Amperage Draw on Start of Compressor

Steve – he salon Cruisair unit on my 56 MY has started to draw a lot of amps, albeit only for a split second (like 1/10th of a second). When the compressor kicks on, it will draw anywhere between 60-80 amps and then drop down to normal draw. Other than the amperage spike the unit seems to be working fine. I noticed it because the lights flicker and the genset swoops low for a moment when the spike occurs. It also occurs on dockside power. The spike is both in the cool and the heat mode. It is an original Cruisar 24K BTU unit model WFAH 24C. Does this result from a need for a charge, a compressor problem, an electrical problem (bad start capacitor or start relay) or just from a unit that is need of replacement. Not sure where to start checking but I would hate to have to replace the unit if it is something simple. Any help would be appreciated.JLR

That may not be such an easy answer…It can be just about anything you mention…

Do you have digital controls or manual ?…If digital…Were they factory installed, or retrofitted ?

  • Check all wiring connections.
  • Check for a blown up start capacitor or expanded Run capacitor.
  • Check compressor temp after running for an hour or so…Is it hot ?

At this point I would not be thinking unit replacement till I'd checked the above…

This PDF training link can help with the capacitors & start relay: http://dometic.com/FileOrganiz…..ors%20.pdf

Steve – thanks so much for the help and I apologize if double posting on the HOF forum was a no no. This information will give me a ready head start to diagnose the problem and is much appreciated. Hoping for the best but planning for the worst.

John~

I'd first like to say that posting over there is not a No No…

I just pay more attention over here & it is easier for me to keep up if I only do it in one place.

Please do let me/us know how you fair with the info I have given so far & we can take it from there  Cool
