Hello,

1997 Island PacketCat 35, South Florida, Miami. Installed "after market" ???

A/C unit in question: Marine Air System, 1997 vintage, VCP7-16K self Contained Passport II controller

The unit will come on from the control panel, but the air from the vent is not cold.

The unit had been on the HU Setting. We lowered the temp and the Cool indicator lit up, the fan started but the discharge air was not chilled, and no water is be pumped.

The  water lines and raw water filter are clear, the through hull is open, there was no fault code on the read out, just no cold air or compressor operation. I " reset" by turning off the power, reset factory defaults on the program, tried the heat cycle, but no luck.

I got close to the unit and had someone turn it on; the unit clicks, actually 2 clicks, the blower fan starts, but the compressor won't run or the pump start to circulate water.

Am I doomed? What could cause this?Cry

Do you notice any cabin lights dimming or do you have a volt or amp meter in the main electrical panel ?

Watch for a voltage drop on a volt meter, or a amperage spike if it has an amp meter…

If you notice none of the above…It could be as simple as a burnt wire or connection somewhere…Where is another story…

It can happen in several places, but check for what I mentioned first & let me know either way…

Hello,

There is no amp meter in this circuit. There is a breaker but the Air Condition is on it's own breaker.

I didn't notice the lights dim, but cabin lights are 12 volt.

There was a fan running during our trials of restarting and resetting, and I didn't notice any draw down in speed.

Al~

I was thinking that Island Packet at least installed a voltmeter in the main breaker panel…

If you don't notice the compressor even trying to start, it can be one of two things:

  1. The Passport board is not sending out power to the compressor…Bad Board.
  2. There is a wire or connection burnt/severed in between the Passport board & the compressor.

With the unit in the cool mode & the snowflake indicating that the compressor should be running…Take a voltage reading with a test meter at the Comp L1 & L2 terminals…If you have line voltage there…Then look for a bad wire or connection to the compressor (remove the compressor terminal cover on top of it too)

If you find no/low voltage at those terminals…You will need to replace the board…

Hello Steve,

I'll check per your instruction.

Just to be clear, there is both meters in the main panel, however the AC unit is on it;'s own beaker and not connect thru the main panel.

I'll have to move the unit to get to the terminal board, installer has that side of the unit up against a bulkhead so cover cannot be taken off with out moving, ah well!

That's correct, the compressor isn't even trying to start, the only sound is two clicks and then nothing.

Thanks again for the prompt reply.

Al

PS What if the board is gone? Surprised

If the board is bad…There is a replacement for the Passport II board but it is $5 more than the Retrofit kit to the newer Passport I/O that has improved components…That compressor relay is one…

Hey Steve,

I opened the box and checked the various terminals; L1-L2, 110v, Fan L1-L2/valve 110v, Comp L1-L2 0v, Pump L1-L2, 0v. This with the snow flake showing on the control panel, and the fan running.

So do you think it's the board? or Comp relay on the board? Can it be repaired, or do I need to upgrade to the new system Passport I/O?

Hi Al~

The relay on the board is not available…Plus you have no voltage out to the pump either…That means that relay is bad too, or something else on the board has failed to keep both from energizing…

You would be best served to do the retrofit to the Passport I/O…

I will e-mail you (to the address you registered here with) my pricing…

Steve~
