Compressor makes an awful sound

Its a 1997 unit and uses a RKA5510EXA compressor. I bought the boat about a year ago and the first owners did not make much use of it, only 400 hours on the engines and never ran the a/c unless they where using the boat.

Ps the boat is 1993 Carver

That looks like a Tecumseh model # and I'm guessing it the "R" stands for Rotary….

If you look again at the PDF & page down to replacement compressors….The short Tubby compressor on the left is a Piston type…The taller one on the right is a Rotary…

Thing here is with that little run time/usage….What made it go bad ???

What size duct is connected ???

What I'm thinking here is if the boat was delivered new with A/C…

1993 boat, 1997 A/C…So the first unit only lasted what 4 maybe 5 years ?…Now another has failed without much usage ???

Kinda points to a problem somewhere…Maybe in the installation…

Yes a rotary unit. I replaced the ducting a couple of months ago the was able to upsize it by 1". This unit has a multi contact connector plug between the electricalbox and the unit that has been giving me some problems (bad connections) and I am planning to just hard wire it. I also found that the waterpump is to small and have a new bigger one to put in.

I have 2 units, a 12000 and 16000 and it was all running of one lc-3cp-md and I am replacing it with a ac-5c-md.

A follow up.

I had an a/c tech that is a friend of a boating friend replace the compressor and charge it, than I reinstalled it myself, hard wired it and replaced the pump.

It is much quieter than before and cool better to, so all is good.
