Compressor kicking out after 3 or 4 seconds

Cruisair heat pump model WJAH12, serial J85EQ35. Trojan 32, built 1989, believe this is factory installed. One of two units, both supplied by same water pump. Location Seneca Lake, Waterloo, NY. Never seen salt.

Compressor was kicking out after 3 or 4 seconds. Gauges showed 100 lbs both sides at 75 degrees. R22 system, takes 1 lb 5 oz. Water-cooled condenser. This morning I recovered 6.4 oz, pumping down to zero but not into a vacuum. No liquid at all through sight glass. Weighed in proper charge.

Compressor still kicking out after 3 or 4 seconds. I have no schematics as of yet, the installation manual just has drawings showing where to plug in to thermostat and AC power. Thermostat is 3-knob vertical type.

Boat has two of these things, the other one is running but icing up at the receiver.

I'm a residential AC tech but I'm not much with heat pumps and never serviced a Cruisair before.

Compressor was kicking out after 3 or 4 seconds. Gauges showed 100 lbs both sides at 75 degrees. R22 system, takes 1 lb 5 oz.…This is the amount of R-22 the condensing unit shipped with…Like residential AC they have no way of knowing how long the line set will be…Or if there will be more than one air coil installed….Water-cooled condenser.…Yes and is it pumping water over the side of the boat ?… This morning I recovered 6.4 oz, pumping down to zero but not into a vacuum. No liquid at all through sight glass...What sight glass ?…These are capillary tube metered systems… Weighed in proper charge.

Compressor still kicking out after 3 or 4 seconds.…What are the pressures at the time it shuts off ?… I have no schematics as of yet, the installation manual just has drawings showing where to plug in to thermostat and AC power. Thermostat is 3-knob vertical type.

Boat has two of these things, the other one is running but icing up at the receiver...Suction or liquid line ?…What are it's pressures when running ?

Hello Steve -

The line set is about 10 feet, maybe less. It's my opinion that nominal charge is sufficient, but I'm open to correction on that.

I meant the sight glass on my manifold during recovery, there was no liquid observed.

Water pump flow is the next thing I need to check, I had to wrap up so the customer could use the boat. Rather an awkward situation.

I understand  Wink  But do they want it fixed or not ?… Laugh

On your next trip…Know that with the WJAH units with 3 knob controls…There are only four things that interrupt the compressor, and they all are line voltage…Breaker > T-Stat > High Press Switch > Compressor Thermal Overload…In that order…

The Pressure switch opens at 425 psi & automatically resets at 325 psi…Therefore without water, the pressure switch will interrupt, then again close as pressures equalize…But the compressor trying to re-start against the 325 psi will usually trip the breaker, or possibly the overload…

Most times it's the breaker that trips on that re-start unless the overload has gotten weak from tripping…Which is possible due to the low amount of R-22 you recovered from that system the compressor was likely running very hot…

Is the paint on the compressor discolored ?

Normal operating pressures should be similar to what you are used to in R-22 residential systems…Maybe slightly lower head due to the water temps up there…

I'm here if you have any more questions…

Thanks Steve, I haven't gotten back to it yet, lots of schedule conflicts, but I should see it again tomorrow afternoon or next day. Owner finally parked it for a while.

I will check through your list and get back to you! Thanks again.

Oh, the paint on the compressor was not discolored. These units look brand new, in fact. I'm impressed with the quality of construction, finish, and features.
