Coils freezing up.

I have a 2005 Hunter 33 with a Polar Bay 16000 btu self contained AC unit with Polar Bay digital controls in Houston Texas. Current water temp is 75F

Last January (water temp 45F) when using the reverse cycle heat of the unit the breaker on the main AC power panel of the boat would trip every hour or so. Called an AC guy out to check the unit and was told that it was severly over charged. He removed some freon from the unit and said it was working just fine. Once the weather got wamer and we started using the AC the coils would freeze up after running for a few hours. They freeze up to the point that almost no air can make it through. If you let the ice melt for about 30 minutes the unit runs fine again for a few hours (1 1/2 to 3) then freezes up again. I have cleaned the strainer and the return air filter, and checked the output of the water pump which seems to be working fine.(it's only 2 years old) I have run out of ideas. Also we do not get any codes on the control panel during this freeze up. Hope one of you has a suggestion.

Hi Don~

Your problem is common & your A/C guy should have noticed it….You don't have enough air flow…Likely due to ductwork or grill area that won't allow the air flow the system was designed to move…

Dumping refrigerant so that it would heat without tripping the breaker is proof (and the wrong thing to do)…Now the system is too low to cool without icing.

What size duct, and how many grills of what size do you have ?…This is "All Important" for direct expansion A/C-Heat….

Surprised How to clean the coils so they DON'T freeze up?  Or is there something else to do??

Thanks!

Hi Pat~

Dirty coils are just one reason for icing…Have you confirmed that your coils are dirty & blocking air flow ?

If you haven't already…You may want to read this post about icing: http://marine-ac.com/forum/tro…..38;ret=all

After you get thru that we can talk more about your situation…
