Burned Board on Marine Air 2-6 PRP

I have four (16k BTU) Marine Air units all plumbed to a single Marine Air P100Z raw water pump.  I'm using a 2-6 PRP pump relay.  I recently had to remount the PRP (as part of a different project) and in the process I noticed that the wires providing power to the pump, the metal housing of the PRP box, and the small resistor on the board closest to the pump power supply connections had very noticeable burn marks.  The plumbing system is currently winternized so I can't do any testing but at the end of last season the pump was swichting on and off normally.  I'm contemplating replacing the board during this off-season but I was wondering a couple of things:

1.  Is this a normal issue with the older version of the PRP board? (I think I read that the triac is mounted differently than the newer version?)

2.  Is the P100Z ok to operate on 208V power?  (The marina is on 208V instead of 230V power and I counldn't find any info in the Marine Air pump specs. Although, from the label on the pump motor it appears to be ok at 208V.)

3.  Could the P100Z be drawing too much current for the PRP at 208V?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Hi Chris~

The P-100 pump should draw around 4 amps on 208 volts….So that should not be a problem for the 6PRP unless it (the pump) is starting to fail & drawing higher amperage…I'd also look for loose connections causing them to arc & heat up…

Yes…Marine Air has changed the board & triac (heavier duty triac) location but as I have said here before…I prefer Cruisair's Pump relays for the simple reason that each part is individual & replaceable…You can carry spares, or replace just one part if it fails…

With the Marine Air Boxes…It's replace the whole board no matter what fails, as all parts are intergrated onto that board….And the board is $250…

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the quick reply!

I did do a visual inspection of the connections and they seem to be in order and the wiring is of appropriate gauge.

I noticed that the Dometic website doesn't even list the Marine Air PRP boxes anymore and is listing the Cruisair boxes as the only pump relay option (for both Cruisair and Marine Air brands).  http://www.dometic.com/enus/Am…..taid=85103

I haven't had a chance to completley investigate this but I assume the "trigger" voltage from the Marine Air A/C units is compatible with the PR8X pump relay box?  If so, I'll probably purchase the PR8X with the appropriate number of triggers instead of replacing the PRP board.

Thanks,

Chris

That is interesting…and news to me…I'm glad it went Cruisair's way this time…It really is a better box…

Yes the voltage is compatiable…The triggers are available as 115 or 230 volt, and the system/s voltage will be how you select the triggers…They can also be mixed…IE: Three 230's & one 115…or any other combo.

You can also order the box with the triggers already installed but only in a single voltage…In your case, if all four units are 230 volt then order the PR8X-4C…If all four units are 115 volt…leave out the "C" which Cruisair always uses in model #'s to denote 230 volt…

The pump voltage is what it is from the breaker…The PR8X will switch whatever it is coming into the box…

All my units are 230V so need to mix but good to know that it's possible.

Can I order the PR8X-4C through your online store or do I need to call with my order?

Thanks,

Chris

Probably best to call Chris…I don't think I even have the PR8X-4C listed yet…

We have been having troubles with this simple press site so adding inventory got haulted…Not sure if we are going to change site providers yet…
