Ac systems icing up

My friend had asked me to come and look at his 16k heat pump unit on his sail boat. He told me it would start up in ac mode and work well for about 10 mins meaning the supply air was about 56 and the return being about 75. It is a water cooled unit by the way. Then the supply air would rapidly change to 75 and the return the same basically ambient air. Upon my inspection I noticed the filter in the return was clogged up so i cleaned it. Hoping that would solve the issue but it didn't. I noticed that the compressor was getting scolding hot. I put my regular resiidential r-22 gauges on and noticed the suction side was reading at 115 psi. Personally I felt that was way to high but I'm not familiar with marine systems. I also noticed that the bottom half of what i thought was a suction line drier was icing up ever so slightly. Can you help me pin point what the problem may be?

What was the high side pressure when you were getting the 115 psi suction ?

Also what was the cabin & water temp at that time & was the unit pumping good solid water over the side of the boat ?

Hard for either of us to diagnose/pinpoint a problem with only part of the picture…

The cabin temp was about 80 and the water temp was probably about mid 70's. I didn't check the high side temp but as an assumption im gonna say 325 ish. Given the temp of the liquid line. There was ample enough water dispersing on the side of the boat. Is that a normal suction pressure?

It would be with head pressure that high…The high pressure switch is set to shut the compressor off at 425 and that's part of what I'm trying to determine here…Is the compressor cycling off ??…We do need to know head pressure to get the full picture…

What is your definition of "Ample Enough" ?…Full solid thru hull with no bubbles, or what might make it look milky ?

If he has good water flow, he may just have a scaled up condenser (water coil) and that scale is acting like an insulating blanket preventing proper transfer of heat to the water (like a dirty radiator in your car)

I would expect normal head pressure in mid 70's seawater and 80 degree cabin to be around 225-235 psi…This will also bring your suction down to around 72-73 psi which will give you around a 42 degree evaporator coil…

Acid flushing the water coil may be your answer, but good clean, clear, flow is imperative even with a clean coil…I would check both before dumping refrigerant to lower the head…Not that you were thinking about it  Wink

Thanks Steve thats what I'll try to do. It was a good flow of water not milky but your right it could be scaled up not allowing it to cool the coils. I'll give that a shot and see what happens. I'll keep you posted.
