A/C Compressor is hot to touch and will not restart after recycle

I have a 53 Hatteras with a 16000 BTU Cruisair system with SMXII controls. The boat is in Bradenton and the water temp is 83 degrees. When it runs and first starts it will run for awhile (1/2 an hour) before the compressor just goes off even though the A/C light is still on. It is cooling good during this time before compressor shuts off (Also no codes on the SMXII). I found by just an accident once that I tapped the compressor and it came back on. It would run for awhile again and then go off again. If the temp outside is cool enough that the temp reaches the set point before doing this the A/C will cycle and work good all day. But as soon as all the doors are open and it has to catch back up again meaning it has to run straight for over 1/2 an hour it will go off at the compressor. Again just tapping it will allow it to come back on. Because the top of the compressor is very hot to touch I am guessing that I might be low on freon and maybe have an electrical issue. I installed an APC unit on the boat and during a really hot day which it is in Florida now I see the voltage coming into the boat is only around 114 volts. At night this goes to 120 and then I have no issue. I will be bringing my guages to check all 4 units this weekend. I have 3 units really hot when they run and one unit cool to the touch with sweating. All of these units were replaced new less than 2 years ago. Looking for suggestions were to start. 2 units are 16,000 and 2 are 10,000. All Cruisairs Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hi Gregg~

From your description it seems that the 16K in question is shutting off on the compressor's thermal overload which is located under the cover for the wire connections on the compressor…

You are correct…The cause of the overheat is likely low refrigerant…Is the paint discolored ?…Do not continue to run it until it can be serviced or you will loose that compressor…Refrigerant return to the compressor is what cools it (the water only removes heat from the refrigerant)

The compressor that is cold & sweating is either overcharged with refrigerant, or the air handler has an air flow restriction…

Gauge readings can help us with all this…

what is considered a "Hot" temperature? my Cruisair 16,000 condenser temp runs 150 deg measured with  a handheld infer red. My 24,000 runs 75 deg. is this what you are seeing?

I was told once (by a Cruisair engineer) that the 16K compressor (it's the only model piston type comp) will run hotter than others…Possibly up-to 160 degrees in some spots….But I have never left one running that hot…Yes they do run hotter but at 150…I'd need to ask where you are measuring that ?

I like to have a cold sweat back right to where the suction tube enters the top of the compressor…In colder cabin temps the sweat circle (on the can) should be no larger than a quarter…

Steve~
