Hey everyone…..I just bought a boat with out any knowlege or info about the onboard systems.  I do not know what I have so I can not even ask a question.  I am not an refrig/ac person.  it is belt driven and sets near the engine.  It has a 90vdc electric motor.  I am trying to resize a picture to post.  If anyone can help with technique for posting pic……help!

But atleast I have a place to put it, now….Billy

Hi Billy~ Welcome~

As far as posting pictures…I find that the TinyPic method described here http://marine-ac.com/forum/adm…..very-easy/ is best…

I see that you have tried the other way, and I have to approve those (which I don't know where to do it at since no one ever uses it) Tiny Pic requires no approval by me or Scott (he knows how to do that stuff)

I only know A/C & Refrigeration type stuff…And from your brief description…I know what you have…

It's an old Grunert VersaMatic R-12 refrigeration unit…It was a nightmare too…

It would take 12 volts DC & bump it up to 90 for that motor, or take the 115 volt A/C dock power, rectify it, and drop it down to 90 VDC…

Parts are non-existent, and it never really worked that well when new…I have worked on several…But it's been years…

Grunert no longer has info on it & just this year they have discontinued that whole belt driven line (got rid of the 90 volt thing many, many, years ago)

Steve, thanks….so I need to trash it and start over……I am retired on a budget, what would you suggest that might use some of the (can I use any of the parts) stuff in the cold box.  I will try and get a discription and picture of the stuff in the box for your opinion…Billy

Billy~

Nothing is cheap now days but…To revive that belt driven unit part next to the engine would likely be much more expensive in the long run…What you likely have in the box/s are Eutectic holding plates (full of a liquid that freezes like a block of ice)…

The system is called a Hold Over or Holding system…You may want to read this post before making plans…

I would ask if you are planning on living aboard, or making long passages ?

Thank you Steve….I hope to live aboard.  I do not plan on long pasages…Caribbean type stuff…couple of days rarely.  Mostly achorages and day to day. I will end up with battery bank and either solar panel or wind generator.  I was on a Pearson 30 for 10 years with out refrig., just used ice every now and then when it was available and cost effective….not daily

If that's the case (with batteries & solar/wind) then you may want to consider one of these options:
