1 unit running – 1 unit not

I have a SeaRay 370 – 1996.  Both Air conditioners are Marine Air.  VHE16KH & VH9K.  Both run off 1 water pump.  Both have been working until this weekend.  First noticed that the Pump would not shut off even with both AC units off.  Had to turn off breaker for the pump to shut down.  When the pump switch is turned on at the panel, immediately starts the pump.  VH9KH will turn on and the compressor works just fine.  The 16KH will cycle to heat first (about 5 secs) then the light for the Cooling basically just blinks.  Compressor does not come on no matter how many times it tries to.

I have not tried to Restore Factory Default Settings as I do not get any compressor Load Faults displayed on the panel.

Hopefully you can help

Hi Dan~

Guess you have more than one problem here…"Could have" should be inserted in that sentence though  Confused and it's time to get out a meter for testing…

First the pump:

We need to determine if either of the A/C units is sending out power to the pump relay with both A/C units off…If one or both are…Then the pump problem is likely in the A/C units board that is sending out power to the pump relay…

If neither unit is sending out power to the pump relay…Then the pump relay is bad & will need to be replaced.

As far as the 16K unit blinking the cool light…Can't say I can remember seeing that…I would first check in the program mode to see if the control somehow got set for Heat only operation, or maybe Electric heat operation instead of Reverse Cycle heat…These are 2 differing settings…I can't say what they are without knowing if you have the ECU, or Passport control…But hopefully you have your manual which will tell you how to check both…

Please pay special attention to if one or both compressors run with the control/s in the off mode…This could cause the pump problem, and also cause a compressor failure if the compressor is running without the fan (and you didn't know it)

Okay, now I am getting somewhere.  I checked the Program mode U1 and U11 for their mode.  Both are set for 0, so that eliminates that.  My manual says it is a Vector Series Self Contained Units ECU Passport so I am confused about ECU or Passport

I did manage to isolate the problem to the 16kh unit.  I turned off all 3 switches at the panel.  When I turned on the Pump Relay (with both units still off) it did not start. I then turned on the 9k unit and the pump started just like it should.  Once the compressor kicked on, the pump started.  When the compressor shut down, so did the pump.

When I then switched on the 16k unit (at the panel), pump started immediately with the control in the off position.

As to whether the compressor is running without the fan, I cannot tell.  It may have previously but now it may be in failure.

I am guessing that at this point, the problem is in the AC unit board sending out power to the Pump relay.    How do
I test the board and where can I get one?

I am guessing that at this point, the problem is in the AC unit board sending out power to the Pump relay.    How do
I test the board and where can I get one?…This is where a multimeter is helpful…I would check for voltage at both the compressor & pump terminals on the board…Not that it will matter much because Marine Air no longer offers replacement boards for either the ECU or original Passport, and this is also where you need to be sure that the compressor will run & actually pump…It's also why I asked about it running without fan which will damage the compressor if it does run that way for long…(and it could very well have with a bad board)

The retrofit kit for your control to the newest Passport I/O control retails for $565.00…

A compressor is around $700… Plus labor, Refrigerant, Drier etc…

To do all of that, you would be better off to buy a complete new Turbo unit & control instead…It will perform better than that unit ever did, do it with less power, and also has the "Green" refrigerant of the future…

I can sell you what ever it is that you decide on at discounted pricing, but my discount schedule is better on units than parts…

Ok, thank you.  Go ahead and give me a price on the unit.  I am assuming I can just replace the old unit without doing anything with the 9k unit or pump?  Also I would need and estimate for freight to 80215 for the Unit.  You can e-mail me at ddavis@bpidirect.net with these answers or call me at 800-796-7969 Ext 107 rather than using this forum if you wish.
