  3. Steve,

I have a MarineAir unit Model V16K-H with the 3 dial set-up control panel. Can this unit be upgraded to a digital control? If it can at what cost? What are your sugestions?

    Thanks,
    Phil

  4. Yes it Can Phillip…

The only questions are if you want the “Elite” or “Passport” model control, If you want White, Black or Grey (Black for Passport & Grey for Elite) and if you want the optional adaptor plate (Passport only) to cover the 3 knob switch hole ?

The Retrofit kit is available with the above options and is priced around $655 retail for the “Elite” and $630 for the “Passport” which may need the $35 adaptor plate if you want to install it in the same hole as the 3 knob…
There is no plate to adapt the Elite to the 3 knob hole so it would need to be mounted elsewhere, and either the old control left in place (disconnected) or the old hole covered somehow…
The kit comes with a 15′ display cable, 7′ air sensor, manual & quick reference card.

I myself prefer the Passport since it has more fan speeds (6 versus 3) and when in the Auto fan speed mode it does not seem to “Hunt” up & down as much.

  5. This seems a little expensive to update and old unit that may die at any time. I don’t know the age of the AC units but the boat is a 1986 Chris Craft 350. Is there any cheaper way to do this?

    Phil

  6. Gosh I am sorry Phil…It is what it is, and I really have no control over retail pricing.
The best I can do is what I offered in my last mail to you….

I will say that to replace the 3 knob controls with the same New 3 knob controls is now $440 retail each.

  7. To all others considering this upgrade to digital…

Marine Air has packaged this kit as a all in one plug & play upgrade…

It is very simple to do, and provides much better cabin temp control, Auto or Manual fan speed control, Humidity Control while away, De-icing functions, as well as about 21 other user programmable parameters that allow you to fine tune each unit/system to it’s installation for the quietest & best performance of that given system.

It’s Not your average digital thermostat that can be found in a Home Center for around 50 to 100 bucks…
Yes you could go down & pick up one of these…The problem is to adapt it’s 24v operation to the Marine unit would likely cost you as much or more than the Marine Air control that was built for Marine applications…You will also need to be very handy with electrical conversions, or pay someone who understands what is involved in installing/wiring a stepdown transformer, and then triggering either a contactor (which is not ignition protected per ABYC or USCG regs) or a solid state relay to carry the compressor load, a smaller relay will also be needed to carry fan load.

Add to all of that it will lack the ability to fine tune the 21 parameters I mention…It will also lack any sort of High/Low pressure/Low Voltage protection shutdowns, and you will loose any ability to control fan speed to reduce noise.

The Marine Air Retrofit was built specifically for your boat & it’s Marine Air brand Unit/s.

    Did I also mention it’s plug & play ???

    Steve~
