Hi Greg...Thanks for the question..

Cruisair now has a Control that is adaptable to the Horizontal orientation with an adaptor plate...The SMX-IRB...The IR stands for Infra Red, and a optional IR remote control is available for it as well...

As far as plug & play...No..Not really, but it's not that big a job either depending on what boat it is in...

From your brief description it seems it may be an Ocean Yacht ?

Anyway...if you want to discuss it further it would probably be better to do so in the forum section...I'd love to help further there...

This is very interesting information. I have an old 3 knob ceiling (horizontal) mount Cruiseair control. Is the SMX control adaptable to the horizontal position? If so, is it generally plug and play like a programmable thermostat in a house or does it require a lot of wiring remodifications?

Hi John~

That would be a question of...What kind of control you have now...Is it horizontal, or vertical...and Do you want low/high pressure protection of the system ?

I have always been partial to the Cruisair SMX family of controls....But that's not to say that the Marine Air models are not good, because they are...

What equipment do you have ? (Cruisair or Marine Air) and what is it's age ?

Marine Air offers some Great retrofit kits for it's past units that depending on your model, may just be a plug & play type retrofit...

However...Cruisair makes (in my opinion) the most universal, fastest responding, easiest to operate control that "for me" probably is easiest to retrofit to all units (regardless of brand) to get the protections I described in my article....

Cruisair's "SMXII" is closest to the form factor of your 3 knob (unless it is horizontal) and the Cruisair SMXIR offers remote control operation (the remote control is optional and around $50 extra)

The SMXIR is square as opposed to rectangular, and will require a adaptor plate (available thru your dealer too) to cover the existing 3 knob control hole, and the Marine Air control (also square) "KIT" may offer Plug & Play installation (well close) if you have a Marine Air unit....

I like the Marine Air units...The newest work very well....It's just that they have had many versions since I have been doing this, and none of them talk to each other...You can't take one thing and plug it into an older version even though it has the same plug...It just won't work!

The SMXII...Which is still produced today, will only require a trim of your existing three knob control hole in the bulkhead to fit right in...

With the SMXIR....IR for "infra red" remote control...
Still talks to any SMX"II" family control (with cable adapters sometimes) So if you are away from a dealer, and without available parts...You may be able to get stuff working just by adapting (which may not be needed)...Or...
With the Cruisair SMXII family...The keypad/display is only required to access or set the control...So in the event of trouble (with the keypad) you can actually rob a keypad/display from another cabin, plug it in to the non working cabin, set your system for what you want, and then unplug it and plug it back into the system you took it away from (if you so choose)...The system will continue to operate as you set it with the keypad, and can be turned on/off with the breaker till you can get near a dealer...
